Art empowers children to explore, observe, and engage with the world around them. We believe that artists bring a unique perspective and ability to nurture the creative spirit of young people.

With a background that includes over 45 years of experience providing a range of visual arts instruction partnerships, we have seen the value of the arts in enriching learning for students of all ages and contributing to the vitality of communities. Studio Institute (Studio) partners with community organizations to help young people develop their creative vision and artistic skills through visual arts workshops led by professional artists.


 

Details

As a Studio artist instructor, you may work with children and young people at early learning centers, schools, or libraries, fostering individual, family, and community engagement in arts learning.

 Studio artist instructors are part-time employees. Work can fluctuate based on season and artist availability. You will receive paid, formal training in our child-centered, process-based methodology, and have opportunities to meet and share experiences, both in-person and virtually, with Studio artists working in other sites and cities.

We are reviewing applications for part-time opportunities for artists in Cleveland, OH and Newark & East Orange, NJ for the 2023–24 school year.

Pay rates range from $35-50/hour. Pay is commensurate with location and experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitating workshops and residencies that are developmentally appropriate, with a focus on student-centered learning; and building social emotional skills in addition to visual arts learning goals

  • Participating in the Studio artist community by attending paid meetings and trainings

  • Creating outlines and lesson plans that embody the goals of Studio programs

  • Sharing outlines and lesson plans with Studio staff, classroom teachers, and school administration

  • Communicating with Studio and school staff regarding all aspects of programming

  • Traveling to and teaching in-person at school and community settings

  • Flexibility to shift to virtual instruction and/or create pre-recorded teaching segments, depending on health and safety protocols and the policies of assigned schools and community settings.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in visual arts, education, or an arts-related field

  • Foundational visual art skills in painting, drawing, and/or sculpture

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, ages, and abilities of people in school or community settings

  • Understanding and having an interest in working with young students (ages 3–5 years)

  • Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with a range of diverse partners and local stakeholders, such as students, classroom teachers, school administrators, and Studio staff

  • Interest in and capacity for developing and implementing sequenced instructional plans

  • Reliable transportation and a willingness to travel and teach in-person at various settings

  • Willingness to attend meetings, trainings, and complete paperwork in addition to teaching classes

  • Meet background check requirements and receive fingerprint clearance.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • An active professional visual art practice, as demonstrated through the sharing of professional works, a website, and/or an artist’s resume

  • Experience working with students ages 3–5 years (strongly preferred for work in Newark and East Orange, New Jersey; and Greenwich, Connecticut).

  • Fluency in Spanish.

Studio Institute requires all employees to be fully vaccinated (including booster vaccination) for COVID-19 prior to starting work, unless precluded from doing so by applicable law. Proof of vaccination is required prior to applicant’s first day of work.
